Star Trek: The Next Generation

Summary

After being premise in the series premier installment ofStar Trek : The Next Generation , Q became a thorn in the side of Captain Picard as he develop a certain fondness for annoying the Enterprise sea captain . Q seem in about one episode in every season ofTNG , but Gene Roddenberry originally wantedmore Q episodes . Still , Q became one ofStar Trek’sbest recurring characters , and the powerful trickster continues to have a presence in modernTrek . Q often messed with clip , andTNGseason 2 , episode 13 , " Time Squared " was originally mean to be a lead - in to a more substantive Q storyline involving prison term travel .

The Star Trek enfranchisement has done a lot of time - locomotion story in various shows and movies , and some have been undeniably undecomposed than others .

Roddenberry Removed Q From Star Trek: TNG “Time Squared” & Broke The Episode

The events of “Time Squared” make little sense without Q’s intervention.

Star Trek : The Next Generation’s"Time Squared " begins with a great hook , as the USS Enterprise - D run across a shuttle pack a matching Captain Picard . As the original Picard and his crew work to run this mystery , they discover that the shuttle is actually from six hours into the future . As the Enterprise continues on its course , the ship shortly gets immobilize within an unexplained vortex . In the death , the original Picard flies the Enterprise straight through the vortex , but there is no account given for why this design is successful , or why the next Picard testify up in the first home .

Without Q manipulating thing , the events of " Time Squared " have no logical explanation .

As it stand , " Time Squared " makes no horse sense , but the original storyline had Q as the mastermind behind the events of the episode . Initially , " Time Squared " was signify to extend intothe excellent Q instalment , " Q Who , " a few episode later . That episode would have hold a shot in which Picard suddenly found himself on a shuttle reliving the events of " Time Squared " from a dissimilar position . Then Q would have appeared , explain that he was the one behind the strange events of " Time Squared , " as well as a few other funny occurrences on the Enterprise . Without Q control things , the issue of " Time Squared " have no ordered explanation .

It ’s undecipherable why Gene Roddenberry nixed this melodic theme , although it could be because he did not want any serialized elements colligate multipleTNGepisodes . Roddenberry prefer every instalment to be separate , with the end of each floor returning everything to the status quo .

Why Time Travel In Star Trek: TNG “Time Squared” Makes No Sense

The time travel works differently than any other Star Trek story.

Although Captain Picard cite previous instances of time travelling inStar Trek(including theStar Trek IV : The Voyage Home ’s slingshot effect),the time locomotion in " Time Squared " is unlike any other example ofStar Trektime traveling . When the future Picard is first brought to the endeavor , he is unconscious , and Dr. Katherine Pulaski ( Diana Muldaur ) says that his brain waves are"out of phase . “When she afterward tries to revive him , the stimulant has the opposite effect . When examining the shuttle , Lt . Commander Data ( Brent Spiner ) and Lt . Geordi La Forge ( LeVar Burton ) also have to do the opposite of what they normally would to power the birdie .

Before fly the Enterprise into the vortex , the original Picard defeat his succeeding counterpart , in a second that feels very out of quality for the normally non - trigger-happy chieftain .

When the succeeding Picard does find consciousness , he is disoriented and ineffective to break anything about the events that led him to be in a shuttle alone . He only have sex that he call for to leave the endeavor . SeveralStar Trekcharacters have traveled in time before and even encountered dissimilar versions of themselves , but it never happened the way it does in " Time Squared . “After the Enterprise fly through the vortex , both the future Picard and his shuttle simply vanish into sparse breeze . The front of Q could have explained all of this , but " Time Squared " does not even propose a technobabble account , make it a very perplexing episode ofStar Trek : The Next Generation .
