Hunter Goes “Way Back” WithWe Were The Lucky OnesDirector Tommy Kail

Screen Rant : It ’s a fantastic opportunity to contact you , Georgia , and to talk about this show . It is such a beautiful , and heartwarming , as well as heartbreaking , story . When you were first approached by Tommy and Erica , what was it like learning that they wanted to assist bring this story to the projection screen ?

Georgia Hunter : Well , thanks , Grant , for have me . Tommy and I actually go way back . We meet in 1999 , he ’s a dear friend of my hubby ’s from their summer camp days , so I ’ve been lucky enough to be his friend and follow his work for the totality of his career . And when he approached and pronounce , " Hey , buddy , how would you like to partner up and attempt to bring this story that is so treasured to you to the projection screen ? " , it find like a dream come up true to have a friend to partner with who I trust innately , and adored , and I look up to for his body of work .

He introduce me to Erica , and they ’ve known each other for a long time , too . And when the story hang into her heart , and she embraced it in the same means that he had , I knew it observe its home . So it all , really from the get go , I ’ve just felt so lucky to have it fall into their hands and their center . It really has been a true partnership from the very kickoff .

I do it to hear that , and I in reality did want to touch on the partnership you ’ve just mention . How involved were you in the actual development , composition and all of that on the show ?

Georgia Hunter : Yeah , they gave me the option to be involved or not , and I tell , " I would make out to be involved every stone’s throw of the way . " And they order , " marvelous , we would love for you to be . " So really , from the pitch on to the writers elbow room , I got to be in the room for five months , five minute a day every day , grow to know the writer . I did not write a playscript , I was more there as a advisor and a sounding board , and to furnish source materials and suffice questions . I guess they were so grateful to have me there as that individual that ’s tight to the story itself .

We tried to stay very , very truthful to the story , apparently , wherever we could , since it ’s base on my family history . And then , I was ask over on readiness and was a part of the shoot , and have been in post - product on all the meetings ever since . Sound , and color , and VFX . So , I recognize that this is a very particular once - in - a - lifetime moment for me , and I ’m leaning in to all of it . It ’s been an unbelievable learning bend , and I ’ve just been bowled over by the upshot of all the work that everyone ’s put into it .

Hunter & Co. Made 1 Change From The Book (& She Loved It)

I always love to hear when the original generator is that deeply involved , it mean that something very special ’s being create . You mentioned staying true to the informant material . Were there any major changes made to your leger and your family write up go into this ?

Georgia Hunter : patently , we had to make a few cutting here and there . We did n’t have the sumptuousness of telling a 400 - Sir Frederick Handley Page novel word for word of honor , and it was challenging attempt to tell some backstory , and portray thoughts and the things that I was able to utilize prose for . But our writers were so phenomenal , they somehow managed to pull this nine - year account together into eight beautiful episodes .

One change that we made that I bonk is that in the novel , we spread out in 1939 , just before the warfare break out , and my grandfather is unable to return from France , where he is dwell , to Poland , where his family is . It ’s a story that he told my momma develop up , and his mom write him a letter of the alphabet and said , " Hey , it ’s getting unsafe here , you should n’t come back . " And he was stuck in France . So , instead of beginning there , we decided to begin in 1938 and show that family over Passover which , in the novel , Addy just remember in his idea what it was like .

I think it was really important to set up the stage for audiences to fulfil this family . It is a true family , a true ensemble of a piece with the five sib and the parents and a young sister born along the mode . So , I bonk that opening , and being a part of that shoot was one of my favorite days on solidification .
